Higgins Applauds Administration Action on Unfair Chinese Auto Part Practices

Congressman Brian Higgins applauded the Obama Administration's decision to take action to end China's unfair export policies for its own automobile part manufacturers.

"American workers can compete with anyone in the world when everyone's playing by the same rules," said Congressman Higgins. "China's practices are unfair and illegal and I'm pleased to see that the United States will take action to level the playing field. It's time to get hardworking American manufacturers back to work."

China is charged with subsidizing exports of Chinese-made automobiles and automobile parts to boost its own industry, a practice that is prohibited under World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. According to a report from the Alliance for American Manufacturing, Beijing has already spent $27 billion on auto part subsidies, causing imports of Chinese auto parts to increase by 25 percent each year over the past 2 years.

In March of this year, Congressman Higgins joined his Congressional colleagues in sending a letter to President Obama on this issue, urging the Administration to "preserve and protect U.S. production and jobs."

Congressman Higgins has also been active on tackling the issue of Chinese currency manipulation and is a cosponsor of legislation that would allow countervailing duties to be imposed in cases where currency is being artificially manipulated.
