Since 1894 the first Monday in September has marked Labor Day. For many this occasion represents the end of summer, parties, parades, shopping sales, and a three-day weekend. However, Labor Day represents so much more than that.

It is a day to honor those who help make America great: the American worker. The contributions the men and women of the American workforce have made to our country are invaluable. It is their hard work and passion throughout our nation's history that has kept America at the top. That is why it is so important that we come together to put the nearly 23 million unemployed Americans back to work. Our government needs to create economic certainty so the private sector can grow and hire; so that more of our great citizens are a part of our great American workforce.

On this Labor Day, let us remember to never take for granted what the American workforce means to our great nation. As we celebrate today let us keep the men and women in the armed forces in our thoughts and prayers. It is their service and sacrifice that provide us the freedom and safety we enjoy.

I hope that you and your family have a wonderful Labor Day.
