Letter

In an effort to find answers for the friends and families of two young women who died mysteriously in Vietnam, U.S. Sen. Al Franken urged the U.S. State Department to seek to determine the cause of their deaths. One of the women, Kari Bowerman, went to college in Minnesota.

In a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Sen. Franken wrote "I have heard from Minnesotans who are deeply troubled by the mysterious recent deaths of Kari Bowerman and Cathy Huynh in Vietnam. Kari was a graduate of Winona State University in Minnesota. The friends of these young women are seeking answers about the cause of their deaths, and I respectfully request that you do all within your power to determine that cause."

Dear Secretary Clinton:

I have heard from Minnesotans who are deeply troubled by the mysterious recent deaths of Kari Bowerman and Cathy Huynh in Vietnam. Kari was a graduate of Winona State University in Minnesota. The friends of these young women are seeking answers about the cause of their deaths, and I respectfully request that you do all within your power to determine that cause.

As you may know, Kari and Cathy were backpacking through Vietnam in July of this year. On July 30, Kari was admitted to a local hospital and soon suffered a serious respiratory failure; she died a few hours later. Soon thereafter, Cathy was admitted to the same hospital after developing similar symptoms, and she died the next day.

Kari and Cathy's deaths have caused pain and anguish to those who knew them best. Their anguish is heightened by reports that the circumstances surrounding their deaths are similar to others who were traveling in the region and also died suddenly. I respectfully ask that you work with Vietnamese authorities to investigate their unfortunate and untimely deaths, and update my office with any new information so that my constituents in Minnesota may learn what happened to their friends.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Jeff Lomonaco of my staff at 202-224-5641.

Sincerely

Al Franken
United State Senator
