A Safe Nation

Congress' failure to pass a budget for three years and take significant steps to rein in out of control spending has put our national security at risk. Because of this ineptitude, $1 trillion in draconian cuts to our defense budget will automatically kick in at the end of the year. But, the demand on our men and women in uniform continues to increase, as do our obligations at home and around the globe.

We need a Senator who not only supports our military, but also understands their needs because he is one of them. A Senator who has served in both of the major wars of our time -- Iraq and Afghanistan -- and at the Pentagon working for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. A Senator who knows the indispensible roles that Bath Iron Works and Kittery Naval Shipyard play in the defense of our nation.

A strong military is crucial to our safety, security and prosperity and our men and women in uniform are the most dedicated, best trained fighting force in the world. The least we can do to thank them for their service is to provide them with the tools necessary to do the very difficult job they do thanklessly every day.
