Runyan Meets Employees of BAE Systems, INC

On Tuesday August 21st, Congressman Jon Runyan (R-NJ) visited BAE Systems Inc in Mt. Laurel. During the visit, Congressman Runyan learned about all of the work that BAE Systems does in Southern New Jersey, and had the opportunity to speak directly to the employees.

"The tour of BAE was very interesting and informative," said Congressman Runyan. "BAE is an integral part of our region's economy and is vital to protecting our warfighters who are defending the United States. I particularly enjoyed speaking with the employees and listening to their concerns regarding sequestration, Continuing Resolutions, and budget cuts to the Department of Defense. Their concerns about sequestration are well founded and underscore the importance of Democrats and Republicans working together to halt these cuts, by identifying alternate funding streams. "

BAE Systems Inc is the third largest defense contractor in the United States and employs 140 individuals in New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District, 900 throughout New Jersey, and approximately 36,000 in the United States. The office that Congressman Runyan toured specifically deals with Support Solutions for the United States Military, especially the AEGIS system based at Lockheed Moorestown. BAE System provides third party support and oversight for the AEGIS system to ensure the weapons system is continually in working order.

As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, Congressman Runyan is committed to working to make sure that the cuts expected under sequestration do not happen. He has supported multiple plans that offer a solution to sequestration and voted in favor of legislation that would avert sequestration in 2013, including cosponsoring H.R. 3662, the Down Payment to Protect National Security Act of 2011. He also supported legislation to prevent $98 billion in automatic discretionary spending cuts--including $55 billion in military cuts scheduled for next year.

Congressman Runyan is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, House Veterans Affairs Committee, and the Natural Resources Committee. He also serves as the Chairman of the Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs.
