Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, released the following statement regarding today's announcement from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that it has finalized new greenhouse gas emission and fuel economy standards for Model Years 2017 to 2025 vehicles:

"In addition to saving the U.S. auto industry, President Obama is leading the way by setting stronger national fuel economy standards that will lower fuel costs for consumers and will create a healthier environment. This is a win-win-win for the American people."

On July 29, 2011, the White House announced that it reached an agreement with auto manufacturers, the United Auto Workers, and others regarding greenhouse gas emission and fuel economy standards for Model Year 2017-2025 vehicles. The proposed rule was released on November 16, 2011, which was followed by a lengthy notice and comment period.

The agreement follows a similar agreement that led to the national emissions standards set by the EPA on April 1, 2010, for Model Year 2012-2016 vehicles.

These new standards will save consumers money by lowering gas bills, create jobs, decrease our dependence on foreign oil, and improve air quality across our nation.
