U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita, a member of the House Budget Committee, today issued the following statement after the national debt surpassed $16 trillion:
"This terrible news is the result of decades of intergenerational theft. Over and over again, politicians have sacrificed the economic liberty of Americans who aren't born yet in order to pay for benefits in the here and now. This is immoral and, with around 10,000 people per day retiring into Medicare and Social Security, it's unsustainable.
"On the Budget Committee, I've worked with Chairman Paul Ryan to put forth a plan that would address the drivers of our debt. With the budget proposal we passed, we've made the case to the American people that for decades, they've been lied to, and we have the data to prove it. And we've shown a path forward for dealing with our $16 trillion in debt, and the $100 trillion in unfunded promises on the horizon," said Rokita.
