Excerpt: "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of Ambassador Chris Stevens, Foreign Service Information Management Officer, Sean Smith and their two colleagues whose lives were taken yesterday while serving their country in Benghazi. Their tragic loss is yet another reminder that the United States remains a target for those who harbor hatred for freedom and democracy, despite the tireless efforts of our diplomatic corps."

Washington--Chief Deputy Whip Peter Roskam (R-IL) released the following statement in response to the attacks on the Americans in Libya and Egypt:

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of Ambassador Chris Stevens, Foreign Service Information Management Officer, Sean Smith and their two colleagues whose lives were taken yesterday while serving their country in Benghazi. Their tragic loss is yet another reminder that the United States remains a target for those who harbor hatred for freedom and democracy, despite the tireless efforts of our diplomatic corps.

"We condemn these attacks, carried out by violent extremists, and oppose their destructive aims. Today we pray for the safety of Americans in both Libya and Egypt, and for those Americans who face hostility and danger around the world."
