Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono (HI-02) released the following statement on the death of four American diplomatic officials, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens, during an attack on the United States consulate in Benghazi, Libya:
"I am deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of American public servants in Benghazi, Libya. My heart goes out to the families of Ambassador Christopher Stevens, Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith, and the two unidentified American personnel who were the victims of vicious and unjustified acts of violence.
"The public servants in Benghazi died serving our nation and supporting democracy and human rights for the Libyan people. I applaud President Obama's plans to bolster security for U.S. diplomatic posts worldwide. The men and women of our Foreign Service, who put their lives at risk each day in humanitarian and diplomatic missions, deserve no less. "
