Southerland Responds to National Debt Hitting $16 Trillion

Statement

Date: Sept. 4, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

Representative Steve Southerland, II issued the following statement today as the national debt topped $16 trillion for the first time in U.S. history:

"When President Obama promised to cut the deficit in half in during his first term in office the American people took him at his word. However, he has ushered in an era of unparalleled reckless spending that has pushed our national debt above $16 trillion for the first time in history. This sad milestone offers an urgent reminder that Washington's poor decisions have put our children and grandchildren on the path to fiscal ruin. How many more wake-up calls will it take before we resolve to make the tough decisions that fix our fiscal future? It is time for a new direction."
