Southerland Responds to South Atlantic Red Snapper Reopening

Representative Steve Southerland, II issued the following statement today regarding NOAA Fisheries' temporary rule reopening the South Atlantic red snapper season for two weekends in September after a nearly 1,000-day closure:

"As the closure of the South Atlantic red snapper fishery neared 1,000 days, I authored a letter in June to the Commerce secretary urging a reopening for the benefit of those coastal communities suffering job losses and business closures due to the lack of regular stock assessments. Our fishermen will tell you the fish are there in abundance, but until a new stock assessment is completed and the federal government stops relying on obsolete data to regulate our fisheries, there is no hope of a sustained economic recovery. I am hopeful that this short September fishing window will lead to a sustained emergency opening in the South Atlantic region until a critical new stock assessment takes place."
