Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today on the United States Agriculture Department (USDA)'s suspension of Central Valley Meat for possible humane handling violations.
"I am concerned that there continue to be violations of the minimum humane handling requirements established and enforced by the USDA. Even more alarming is the possibility that these violations are more widespread than we know as this violation was identified by a non-government organization. And, while it is reassuring that our food supply was not compromised, we must treat all animals with the respect that they deserve. All companies should strive to meet or exceed the animal welfare regulations and clearly USDA needs additional staff in facilities to ensure that this is the case."
