In response to the national debt exceeding $16,000,000,000,000 for the first time in American history, U.S. Rep. Bobby Schilling (R-Colona) released the following statement.

"Enough is enough," Schilling said. "We're talking about $16,000,000,000,000--that's a few too many zeroes. It's time for career politicians to stop behaving irresponsibly, cut back on the wasteful spending, and start running government like a business. Balancing our budget is our only option. We've got to get this nation back on track so we can preserve it for our kids and our grandkids."

In January 2009, the national debt stood at just $10,600,000,000,000. In just three and a half years, the national debt has grown by more than 50 percent.
