Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) today released the following statement on the anniversary of the September 11, 2011, terrorist attacks.

"Eleven years ago, our nation was struck by horrific acts of terrorism that took more than 3,000 American lives within a few short hours. The September 11, 2001 attacks on American soil were rooted in hate and fear of who we are as a country: democratic, free, and committed to values of equality and inclusion.

"Even in the face of tragedy, the American spirit was unbroken at Ground Zero in Manhattan, the Pentagon in Virginia, in a field outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and in homes across this country. Fire fighters rushed to the rubble to search for survivors, neighbors came to support first responders with water and food, Americans of all stripes rallied together to help and support each other.

"In the last eleven years, emergency preparedness against all threats has become a national priority. Earlier this year, I worked to pass legislation that will enhance the security of mass transit systems by promoting mass transit-related information sharing between the Department of Homeland Security and state and local law enforcement agencies. This small step will go a long way to ensure the safety and security of commuters and other passengers on buses and subways.

"We must never forget the heroism of those who fought to save lives in the wake of this despicable act. "
