Senator Stabenow Cosponsors Legislation to Help Michigan Businesses Hire Veterans

U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow today cosponsored a bill to aid veterans in their transition back to civilian life and to help returning veterans get good jobs when they come home. The Veterans Jobs Corps Act of 2012 will leverage the skills veterans develop in the military and provide increased job training to ensure returning veterans have the tools they need to land a job and have access to good career opportunities when their service ends. The Senate is expected to vote on the measure Tuesday.
"No veteran should stand at the back of any unemployment line," said Stabenow. "We owe all our veterans our unwavering support and we need to make sure they have the opportunity to get a good job when they come home. This bill helps our well-trained warriors go from serving their country abroad to serving their communities as first responders at home, or get training opportunities to pursue other well-paying jobs."
The Veterans Jobs Corps Act of 2012 would:
* Help place veterans in first responder jobs (police, firefighters, EMTs)
* Create conservation and resource management jobs for veterans focused on restoring America's forests, parks, coasts and public lands
* Implement a pilot program to set up job search facilities near military bases
* Increase access to career specialists for rural veterans who might otherwise not have access to those services
Stabenow has long championed the issue of veterans' employment. Her bipartisan 2012 Farm Bill includes opportunities for veterans such as providing assistance for veterans who are beginning farmers and ranchers and giving priority to producers who are veterans to participate in conservation programs. And the VOW to Hire Heroes Act Stabenow cosponsored provides incentives for businesses to hire veterans, provides job training opportunities and streamlines certification processes to ensure veterans have opportunities to get good jobs. This bill was signed into law last year.
