24th Congressional District candidate Abel Maldonado (R-Santa Maria) today issued the following statement supporting Israel's right to defend itself against the ongoing threat from Iran:
"We live in a time where what happens in one side of the world affects the other. Where regional instability and violence can spread and fuel a global conflict. At a time when the United States should stand firm with the nation of Israel, it is unimaginable that there are voices in Washington refusing to even recognize Jerusalem as its capital city.
"A secure Israel free from violence and hatred is the cornerstone of achieving a long-lasting peace in a region that has been paralyzed by conflict for generations. Anything short of reaffirming our steadfast support as Israel's ally will embolden their enemies leading to a greater threat of regional instability and violence.
"I strongly support the U.S.-Israel Enhanced Security Cooperation Act of 2012 and will go to Washington to ensure that we fulfill the commitments we've made to Israel. We cannot allow Washington to take any steps that result in other nations questioning our resolve and commitment to the Israel people.
"If Iran is going to continue its pursuit of building a nuclear program, Israel has every right to defend itself. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has not relented in his pursuit of an ideological confrontation with Israel or the United States. The economic sanctions levied on Iran have done nothing to deter Tehran from continuing its efforts to build a nuclear arsenal. If Ahmadinejad won't stand down, then the United States should send a definitive message that we will stand-up with and for the people of Israel"
