Ayotte: National Debt Surpassing $16 Trillion Highlights Urgency Of Stopping Runaway Spending

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), a member of the Senate Budget Committee, released the following statement today after the nation's debt climbed above $16 trillion:

"Hitting the $16 trillion debt mark is the latest warning that Washington must take action to stop runaway spending. With our country headed toward a fiscal crisis, it's a complete failure of leadership that it's now been over three years since Senate Democrats last approved a budget. Unless we make tough decisions now, our country is headed the way of Greece - putting the American dream at risk of extinction. That's why we need to pass common sense spending reforms, including a balanced budget amendment and spending caps. We also need to address the primary driver of our long-term debt by putting entitlement programs on a sustainable path."
