Over the weekend Rep. Todd Akin defended his co-sponsorship of a bill banning abortion in cases of rape or incest on the grounds that "legitimate rape" rarely causes pregnancy because "the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down." Rep. Roscoe Bartlett was an original co-sponsor with Rep. Akin of the bill banning abortion in the case of rape or incest and has since co-sponsored the bill in every congress for nearly a decade.
Today John Delaney called on Congressman Bartlett to denounce his fellow co-sponsor, Rep. Todd Akin's comments. "While we respectfully disagree on many issues, I would hope Congressman Bartlett and I could agree there should be no qualification when it comes to an issue as serious as rape. I denounce the comments by Rep. Akin and hope Congressman Bartlett will do the same," said Sixth Congressional District candidate John Delaney. Delaney continued, "As the father of four daughters, April and I care deeply about issues affecting women, and believe -- regardless of your views on choice -- that there is no choice in rape and it is deplorable at every level."
