The most important role of the federal government is to protect its citizens, but it is our brave men and women in uniform that risk everything to keep us free. From those still with us from foreign wars to the men and women coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan today, it is our solemn duty to better serve those who have so bravely served us.
Get our Veterans Back to Work
I currently sit as a board member on the Veterans and Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania with offices in Pittsburgh and Johnstown. The VLP is a non-profit organization that provides job assistance and supportive services to the veteran community of Southwestern Pennsylvania. The primary focus of the VLP is to provide assistance to unemployed, underemployed, and homeless veterans. The Obama/Critz economy has hit veterans harder than most groups, and one million of our veterans are currently unemployed. In Washington, I will fight hard to promote jobs and job protections for our veterans while promoting the economic policies that will give our unemployed and underemployed veterans the opportunities they deserve.
Access to Better Health Care
How to address the problems in our nation's health care system will be an ongoing debate this election, but what is not debatable is that our veterans deserve better care. Those serving our veterans health needs do a fantastic job and are heroes in themselves, but we must remain ever vigilant in making sure our veterans receive the care they deserve, and there is room for improvement. Beyond working to improve the overall scope of our veterans' health care, inconsistencies with access to care must also be addressed. Many active duty military returning from war have significant health care needs that are sometimes denied or significantly delayed on the grounds the care is unrelated to the specific reason the service member returned home. Our brave men and women deserve access to the care they need without threat of a bureaucratic quagmire and I will work hard to make sure that happens.
Better Veteran Services
It is all too much a given that if you are a veteran or the family of a veteran and are seeking benefits or have a claim, you are potentially in for a long and sometimes strenuous experience. Those working hard to process veteran claims have sometimes a thankless job but are honorable all the same. Still, we must do better for our fighting men and women. As the next Congressman for Pennsylvania's Twelfth District, I will work very hard with the Department of Defense and Veterans Administration to reduce inefficiencies, better service, and make sure Congress is providing the resources necessary to give our veterans the attention and care they deserve.
