Letter to President Obama

Letter

U.S. Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) sent a letter today in support of the State's emergency assistance request urging President Obama to issue a major disaster declaration for the State of Louisiana and to expedite emergency assistance in advance of Tropical Storm Isaac. Isaac is forecast to become a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico later today.

"State and local governments need every tool and resource available to respond to this rapidly approaching hurricane", Vitter said. "Due to the serious nature of Tropical Storm Isaac and the worsening forecast by the National Weather Service, there is a clear and justified need for a federal emergency declaration to address this emergency situation."

A copy of Vitter's letter is below.

August 27, 2012

The Honorable Barack Obama
President of the United States
The White House
Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Obama,The National Weather Service forecasts that Tropical storm Isaac will impact the Southeastern coast of Louisiana at Category-2 strength within the next 24 hours. In light of this information, Governor Bobby Jindal has declared a statewide emergency on August 26, 2012 and has asked for a major disaster declaration for the State of Louisiana. I would like to express my support for the state's request and ask that you expedite the needed assistance to Louisiana. Louisiana's coastal parishes and the metropolitan city of New Orleans face the brunt of this probable Hurricane, and the National Weather Service has issued a hurricane warning for this area.

State and local governments need every tool and resource available to respond to this rapidly approaching hurricane. Due to the serious nature of Tropical Storm Isaac and the worsening forecast by the National Weather Service, there is a clear and justified need for a federal emergency declaration to address this emergency situation.

Thank you for your attention to this important issue, and I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

David Vitter
United States Senator
