Walsh's Weekly Wrap-Up

Statement

Date: Aug. 17, 2012
Issues: Defense

Dear Friend,

Thank you so much to everyone who came to my three town hall meetings this past week! Since coming to Congress, I have held over 200 such meetings because it is important to me that I keep my constituents informed about the work that I am doing in Congress on their behalf.

This week, the House of Representative's counsel filed a formal civil suit against US Attorney General Eric Holder. The House voted to hold the Attorney General in contempt on June 28, 2012, after he failed to produce numerous subpoenaed documents in Operation Fast & Furious. It is unfortunate that we have had to turn to the courts, but the House of Representatives is going to use whatever options we have to obtain the answers Brian Terry's family, the Mexican citizens who lost their lives, and the whistleblowers who came forward deserve. I also sent a letter to Department of Labor Secretary Hilda Solis urging her to provide proper guidance to defense and military industry employers who may have to lay off 35,000 employees in Illinois. President Obama signed a law known as sequestration into place that cuts $50 billion in defense spending starting January 2, 2013. Those cuts could lead to the cancellation of thousands of contracts that employ civilians and massive job losses. In June, the Department released guidance that stated that federal law, which requires employers to give ample notification to employees when mass layoffs are expected, was not applicable and implied that it could be ignored. Reminder: My staff will hold mobile office hours every Friday from 12:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. at the Schaumburg Township Center, One Illinois Blvd. Hoffman Estates, IL. If you cannot make it to one of my district offices, let us come to you!

I work for you,
