Today, Congresswoman Laura Richardson announced her support for the Obama Administration's decision to make over $470 million in unspent earmarks immediately available to states. This money will be spent to create jobs and improve transportation across the country.
"As a ranking member of the House Committee on Transportation I know how important it is that this money be put to use to improve our country's infrastructure, and to put American's back to work." said Congresswoman Richardson.
President Obama has vowed to veto any bill with earmarks that comes to his desk, and would also support legislation that would permanently ban earmarks. Some of these earmarked funds are nearly 10 years old, and starting today state departments of transportation will have the ability to use these unspent earmarked highway funds on any eligible highway, transit, passenger rail, or port project.
"Our highways, railways and ports are the backbone of the local and national economies, and their development and maintenance holds the key to sustaining American competitiveness.
Here in California we are ready to start work immediately. I call on the Obama Administration and Secretary LaHood to provide us with the funds necessary to put our citizens back to work, and continue to strengthen California." said Congresswoman Richardson.
