Statement on California Attorney General's Civil Complaint Against Help Hospitalized Veterans

Statement

Date: Aug. 9, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

Ranking Member Henry A. Waxman released the following statement in response to the civil action filed by California Attorney General Kamala D. Harris against Help Hospitalized Veterans:

"Attorney General Harris has taken strong action against Help Hospitalized Veterans. I commend her for her leadership and protection of California's citizens.

"I've been concerned about this group since 2007, when I held hearings into its deceitful actions. It exploited Americans' generosity and the plight of our injured soldiers to line its own pockets. Now at last, it is being held to account.

"Most charities do heroic work. But unless there is independent oversight, an unscrupulous group can betray its donors to enrich itself. I urge attorneys general across the country to follow Attorney General Harris's example and protect consumers from fraudulent organizations masquerading as legitimate nonprofits."
