Every year, thousands of West Virginians and visitors alike enjoy everything from tasty eats to the spectacle of homegrown artisans to thrilling attractions at the annual West Virginia State Fair. Indeed, there is truly something for all ages to appreciate, while also bringing millions of dollars in revenue to our state.
I thank our devoted state Commissioner of Agriculture Gus Douglass, his staff and the countless volunteers, the many talented participants, the community of Fairlea and Greenbrier County for coming together to make this tradition so special each year. It is because of people like them that this event is in its 88th year and is considered one of West Virginia's proudest, family-friendly traditions.
This year's State Fair theme of "Memories that grow year after year" embraces one of our state's greatest principles of coming together as a community to celebrate who we are as West Virginians and Americans. The State Fair characterizes our traditions of promoting agriculture, family values, recreation and education.
From delicious food produced at our local farms to showcased livestock to countless activities, the State Fair has evolved into one of the state's top tourist attractions. Each year, more than 200,000 visitors flock to the grounds to learn more about West Virginia's culture and traditions while indulging in good food, fun and fellowship. In turn, it provides a unique opportunity for West Virginia's finest to showcase their hard work and passion.
Over the years, Gayle and I have always enjoyed our many visits to the State Fair, and this year, I was honored to have members of my staff attend and visit with hundreds of West Virginians. They enjoyed their time speaking directly with residents and hearing their ideas and commonsense solutions on how to rebuild America. Like I have always said, Washington could always use a dose of West Virginia, and my staff is bringing West Virginians thoughts, suggestions and ideas back to Washington so we can build a stronger future for our next generation.
The West Virginia State Fair is a great way for family and friends to come together and create memories that will last for years. If you've never been before, I encourage you to come next year and see for yourself the rich traditions and culture the State Fair offers. If you have attended, come back! There are always new rides, good food and talented entertainment to enjoy.
After all, it is the great West Virginia State Fair.
