Official Response to Supreme Court Ruling on Arizona Law

Press Release

The United States Supreme Court's decision on Monday upholding what is arguably the most controversial provision of Arizona's law, commonly known as SB 1070, demonstrates the dangerous consequences that can result from the lack of political leadership when it comes to immigration issues in the United States.

"Because Washington has been unable to make progress on this issue, states have been forced to deal with it on their own," explains Cesar Henao, Independent candidate for Florida's 21st Congressional District. "All eight justices ruled in the case to allow the 'show me your papers' provision to remain, but with no enforceable action allowed to be taken by the state authorities."

If we are to solve the problems facing our country, including immigration reform, we have to fix the broken politics in Washington. The road we have been traveling gives us a bureaucracy without clear purpose, and frustrated states and citizens concerned for their communities.

"These issues can't be effectively solved by executive orders or by each state trying their own thing," said Henao. "We need leaders in Congress who are committed to having the hard conversations, working together and making the right decisions."

There needs to be a common sense road to legality, but it's up to immigrants to walk a thin line and work extremely hard to earn legal status. If you have come here illegally you are already on your second chance. Legal status is not a right it must be earned.

I implore politicians in Washington to set aside partisanship and understand the potential consequences of the road we are now on.
