Government's first priority is to enforce laws, keep communities safe, and provide emergency services. I strongly support Alaska's police, fire, and emergency medical personnel. During my tenure as Co-Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, the Legislature has made several investments in public safety infrastructure, training, and personnel. Since 2004, we've added 49 State Troopers and 75 Village Public Safety Officers (VPSOs) to protect our communities.
The state has also funded construction of dozens of fire stations across the state, and improvements to the State Public Safety Academy in Sitka. The Public Safety Academy trains State Troopers and law enforcement officers for Alaska. It is an invaluable institution and a source of pride for Southeast Alaska, and I've fought hard to ensure that facility stays and thrives in Sitka.
