I was the leader for Vermont's Medical marijuana law. Through many years of work with legislators from all parties, we have changed the discourse regarding marijuana policy. While I support decriminalization, we should legalize marijuana, tax it and use the money for drug addiction services for more serious drugs (including alcohol). Our drug policy should be focused on human health as well as the causes of addiction so that we can reduce the need for law enforcement for criminal activity. If we can focus our resources on human health, education, job opportunities and a better quality of life, then we will see lower crime rates and fewer people turning to serious drugs.
