Our borders and neighborhoods will never be safe as long as our society suffers from drug prohibition. Just like with alcohol prohibition, the war on drugs creates: a lucrative black market, criminals, innocent victims, violence, kids on drugs, overcrowded prisons, and fear. If a person wants to use drugs and ruin his or her life, that should be a decision they are free to make. I have far less compassion for that person than I do for the little girl who was shot and killed during drug-related gang violence. She did not choose that. The argument for the legalization of drugs is massive and compelling. It would kickstart our tightening of the belt by lessening the amount of money we borrow every year by approximately 6 billion dollars. This war on drugs can never be won, and until we admit our foolishness, we will continue to spend over 15 billion dollars every year, all the while creating cartel billionaires who terrify entire countries. Think of how much money we'd save by not arresting, trying, and holding drug offenders in prison. Wow. Drug offenders comprise more than 50% of those incarcerated.
