In response to Senate Republicans' move to hold up the reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program by inserting a personhood amendment, U.S. Senate candidate Mazie Hirono released the following statement:
"This latest extreme attempt by Senate Republicans is yet another example of why the people of Hawaii are frustrated with partisan politics in Washington. The National Flood Insurance Program provides critical assistance for all four counties in Hawaii and as we enter hurricane season, its reauthorization is crucial to the health and safety of the people across our state. This is not the bill to debate when life begins.' said Congresswoman Mazie Hirono.
"This amendment once again shows just how far Senate Republicans are willing to go in continuing their war on women over protecting the safety of the people of Hawaii and our country. This is just a glimpse of what their agenda would be should they win the Majority in November.
"I call on Senate Republicans to drop this amendment so we can focus on the issues that matter most: job creation and keeping our people safe."
Republican Senator Rand Paul (KY)'s personhood amendment attached to the reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program would define life as beginning at conception. Current funding for the National Flood Insurance Program is set to expire at the end of July.
