Politics should be about people. To me, education is one of the most important political issues of state government.
I personally benefitted from a strong public education, and Alaska's future depends on providing a strong public education to future generations. I strongly believe public education is one of the State's most important responsibilities.
Inflation-proof education funding; tie the Base Student Allocation to inflation.
Support forward funding. Every year school districts play the hokey-pokey trying to guess how much state funding will come through. It wastes administrative time, energy, and money; teachers don't know if they will have a job the next year; morale in schools and among teachers and parents takes a hit. Among common sense policy solutions, forward funding is most common of them all. I support forward funding.
Oppose "vouchers" and public funding for private education.
The Alaska Performance Scholarship discriminates against rural students -- it sets standards that are fair only for urban students; Angoon High School, for example, does not have a French teacher, thus making it far more difficult for a high-achieving student from Angoon to win the Performance Scholarship. That's not fair. State education policy should acknowledge the realities in rural Alaska, and I will work tirelessly to make sure that's the case.
