Today U.S. Rep. Gary Peters signed the Progressive Change Campaign Committee's petition calling on Michigan Speaker Jase Bolger and Michigan House Majority Floor Leader Jim Stamas to apologize to Rep. Lisa Brown for denying her the right to speak on the floor for saying "vagina" during a debate on abortion. Peters, who represents West Bloomfield with Brown, also denounced the ongoing Republican assault on women's reproductive rights.
"I'm outraged that Tea Party Republicans in Lansing have attempted to silence my friend State Rep. Lisa Brown for defending women's reproductive rights," said U.S. Rep. Gary Peters. "Speaker Bolger and Floor Leader Stamas have no excuse for their behavior. This is a democracy and they need to recognize Rep. Brown's right as an elected official to speak on the floor and apologize, not just to her, but also to the thousands of families in West Bloomfield that we represent. Michiganders are sick of far right anti-women rhetoric, but by standing together and holding them accountable, we'll make them hear our voices."
As of right now, the PCCC's petition asking for an apology has nearly 45,000 signatures.
