Congresswoman Nan Hayworth, M.D. (NY-19) released the following statement today regarding the July unemployment numbers released by the United States Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics.
"Sadly, this is no longer surprising: the number of jobless Americans grew again last month. It has been stalled at over eight percent for over three and a half years. If you include people who want to work but have stopped searching because of the dismal economy and those who are forced to work part-time because they can't find full-time employment, the rate is over 15%--with no improvement in sight.
"This week the House of Representatives passed legislation to provide immediate help to the jobless by eliminating the most burdensome portion of the 'fiscal cliff' that looms as of January, 2013, namely the largest tax increase in American history. With votes from our Democratic colleagues as well, we passed a bill to prevent the tax increase and another bill to guide the creation of a flatter, fairer, and simpler tax code. These bills will relieve burdens on our small business owners and employers, strengthen our economy, and grow jobs. It's unconscionable that Senate Majority Leader Reid has refused votes on the dozens of jobs bills that are collecting dust on his desk--it's time for him to act, and he should start with the bills the House passed on August 2."
