Dr. Dan Benishek released the following statement today regarding July fourth, our nation's birthday:
"As our families gather this Fourth of July to celebrate our nation's independence, I'm reminded of our forefathers and their founding vision for a free people -- life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
"We live in a land of unlimited opportunity. Having lost my father when I was a young boy, I learned about hard work at my Grandmother's hotel where my mother and my family worked to make ends meet. We made beds, cleaned the spittoons, and hauled groceries. With $2,000 in savings, assistance from scholarships, and a part-time job, I worked my way through college and medical school -- both right here in Michigan -- before returning Northern Michigan to start my own practice.
"It wasn't it easy, but it was worth it. That's the American Dream. Only in this land of opportunity, thanks to our forefathers, could I have achieved my American Dream. That is why this is the greatest country in the world.
"I'm proud to live here in Northern Michigan where the American spirit is alive and well. Together, we are fighting to keep the American Dream alive."
