U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, secured critical resources for the M1A2 Abrams tank program in the Fiscal Year 2013 Defense Appropriations bill. The bill, which was passed by Senate Appropriations Committee, includes $129 million for the modernization of the Abrams tank as well as $165 million for upgrades. The funding levels will help ensure workforce stability at the Joint Manufacturing Systems Center (JSMC) in Lima, Ohio.

"The Abrams tank is not only vital to our country's national security and military readiness, but is critically important to the economy of Lima and Allen County," Brown said. "That's why I'm fighting to preserve the Abrams tank program and why I have urged Defense Secretary Panetta and the Obama Administration to continue production of the Abrams tank. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I was proud to secure critical resources for the Lima tank plant. This bill will help ensure that production levels at the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center will be maintained for the next year."

Brown has been a longtime champion of the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center (JSMC). In the spring, prior to consideration of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2013, Brown met with Senate Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin (D-MI) to discuss funding for the JSMC, and in April 2012, sent him a letter urging preservation of the Abrams tank program.

He also sent letters to U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin (D-MI) and the Obama Administration in 2011 urging them to reject plans to end the M1A2 Abrams tank modernization program for Fiscal Year 2012, and met with workers and management at the JSMC in 2010.
