U.S. Senator Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) today issued the following statement after the Senate unanimously approved legislation imposing economic sanctions on Iran and increasing pressure on the country's nuclear program:
"Iran cannot continue acting as a disruptive force in the Middle East," Johanns said. "Their threats, human rights violations and zealous secrecy about their nuclear program must stop and this legislation sends the clear signal that America stands with countries like Israel seeking a peaceful, stable Middle East."
Johanns was a cosponsor of the original version of the sanctions, which went through the Senate Banking Committee on which he serves, and passed the Senate this May.
The final version of the legislation, which passed both the House of Representatives and Senate, expands sanctions against the Central Bank of Iran. The legislation specifically targets supporters of Iran's petroleum industry, members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, and individuals who provide resources contributing to human rights abuses, particularly those in Syria.
