Congressman Tim Griffin (AR-02) issued the following statement after House passage of the Job Protection and Recession Prevention Act (H.R. 8) and the Pathway to Job Creation through a Simpler, Fairer Tax Code Act (H.R. 6169):
"President Obama's plan to raise taxes will destroy more than 700,000 jobs and make the economy even worse, and that's why the House has passed a pro-jobs bill to protect hardworking American taxpayers from a massive tax increase at the end of the year. But it's clear America needs need top-to-bottom, bold tax reform, so we in the House also passed a blueprint to eliminate loopholes and make the tax code simpler, fairer and flatter. President Obama has admitted: "The last thing you want to do is raise taxes in the middle of a recession ' so he should take his own advice and urge the Senate to pass these two important bills that will help American taxpayers."
On Wednesday, the House passed H.R. 8 with bipartisan support, which Rep. Griffin cosponsored. It prevents automatic tax increases by extending current tax rates for one year, provides marriage penalty tax relief, preserves the $1,000 child credit, and keeps the top rate on dividend and capital gains at 15 percent. H.R. 8 would provide certainty to job creators while Congress continues to pursue fundamental tax reform.
H.R. 6169, which passed the House today, establishes a blueprint for fast-tracking tax reform legislation. Under this framework, the House must consider an applicable tax reform bill within 15 days after it's reported out of the Ways and Means Committee. Likewise, in the Senate this type of legislation would not be subject to a cloture vote on a Motion to Proceed or on individual amendments.
