The Keys are one of the most beautiful and unique areas of Florida. Joe will fight to protect and preserve the way of life in the Keys, and has specific proposals he's ready to advocate for his first day on Capitol Hill.
Joe will work toward securing federal funds for new wastewater systems in the Keys, believing that the $5,700 sewer fee is too costly for the average homeowner. He also believes that the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is a national treasure and it should have increased protection and management with support from the federal government.
The Keys have historically been at high-risk for hurricane and wind damage and should have increased protection and support. Joe will push for the creation of a National Catastrophic Windstorm Insurance system that the Keys will have access to. The Citizens Windstorm Insurance model is not sustainable and new changes, including a rise in rates, hurt homeowners, businesses, and the local economy in general.
Joe opposes offshore oil drilling, especially near the coasts of the Keys, which are dependent on the fishing and tourism industry. We have seen the consequences of offshore drilling when it goes wrong. Joe will hold a tough line against drilling near our shores.
