Upendra Chivukula, Deputy Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly and Democratic nominee for Congress (NJ-07), announced that he raised $440,692 during April, May, and June of this year. Chivukula has quickly amassed a campaign war chest catching the attention of many insiders with his second quarter haul.
"New Jersey Democrats are excited about Upendra Chivukula's campaign. Democrats following congressional elections all over the country are starting to move this seat up the list. And, voters in the Seventh Congressional district are seeing that Chivukula is the right person to represent them in Congress. As a pro-business and progrowth Democrat, his views and common sense policy solutions appeal to this district," said Somerset County Chair Peg Schaffer. Schaffer believes that in the next publication of the DCCC's red-to-blue list Chivukula will receive the "emerging race' distinction due to his strong fundraising haul.
Party insiders are upbeat at the quality of candidate they have recruited and point to factors facing Congressman Leonard Lance that make this the race to watch. "Rep. Lance is coming off of a primary where he had to expend significant resources to secure the nomination. Additionally, the party is fractured and Libertarian candidate Patrick McKnight has emerged exposing the party's discontent. Put that together with Upendra's strong fundraising totals, the Chivukula campaign will not face the type of resource deficit that other challengers are facing," said Chivukula's campaign manager Joey Novick.
Strong fundraising totals made the Chivukula camp feel confident about the direction of the race. "The support I have received has been overwhelming. In Congress, my top priorities creating jobs, promoting economic growth, and increased access to edu I am so grateful for such a strong show of support for my agenda to create jobs, increasing access to education," said Upendra Chivukula. "Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we enter the race in a strong position to bring change to the Seventh Congressional District."
The Chivukula campaign reported $434,419 cash on hand at the time of the filing.
