North Dakota Republican US House Candidate Kevin Cramer issued the following statement today supporting United States sovereignty and the 2nd Amendment rights of all US citizens:
"As the United Nations prepares its proposed Arms Trade Treaty today, I am urging President Obama to reject any attempt to include small arms and small arms ammunitions in the final treaty.
"The inclusion of civilian firearms carries with it an implied expansion of federal firearms controls and opens a door to infringement of our 2nd amendment rights. I applaud Senator Jerry Moran's (R-KS) leadership on this issue, gathering together 51 Senate colleagues to block ratification of any treaty which would include such provisions.
"It is ironic that talks regarding the treaty's final language are now being dominated by countries such as Iran, Syria and Cuba, rogue nations that would presumably be the treaty's intended targets in stemming the tide of terrorists and illicit international arms transfers. These countries do not have our best interests at stake. The United States must maintain its full ability to negotiate aid and weapons transfers to allies such as Israel without risking legal entanglements that could arise from such a treaty.
"I certainly hope that groups such as the NRA and others working to protect our 2nd Amendment rights will get behind Senator Moran and all of us who are publicly taking this stand to defend and protect the invaluable rights and freedoms of all US citizens."
