Alternative Sentencing for non-violent offenders has had tremendous results in reducing recidivism in our Court System. Drug Courts, Deferred Prosecution, Boot Camps, and Youthful Offender programs have served to rehabilitate and deter those who have not been proven to be a danger to the public. But in many cases the only recourse is to ensure swift and appropriate discipline of criminal offenders.
Court Referral Programs should be available in drug cases and for alcohol dependency, but only used where the public is adequately protected from those who are a danger. Innovative approaches to sentencing are not always appropriate but many have proven successful in the past in reducing the rate of repeat offenders.
