Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

Congressman Young first sponsored the creation of the National Bone Marrow Donor Program in 1986. In the last 25 years, Congressman Young has been the Program's champion in Washington and has led efforts to expand it to include the National Cord Blood Inventory. Recently, the National Program celebrated two significant milestones: more than 40,000 successful marrow and cord blood transplants have been conducted and over 8 million donors have been added to the national registry.

In April, Congressman Young was honored by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society who presented him with the 2010 Congressional Honors Award. The Society called Congressman Young "a champion in the fight against cancer, and in particular, blood cancers. Congressman Young single-handedly saw the need for, and sponsored, the National Marrow Donor Program in 1985. C. W. Bill Young's leadership in supporting bone marrow transplants for blood cancer patients and research into blood cancer has done much to improve the quality of life of patients and their families."
