Today, U.S. Congressman Phil Roe, M.D. (TN-01) released the following statement on passage of the bipartisan H.R. 5872, the Sequestration Transparency Act of 2012:
"Passage of the bipartisan Sequestration Transparency Act will direct the administration to detail exactly how scheduled sequestration cuts will impact the Department of Defense. Passage of the legislation reaffirms our commitment to our troops and our national security. The automatic cuts set to take effect in January could be devastating to our military, and it's critical we have an accurate view of what's at stake.
"Adequately funding our military is the most important thing we must do to ensure our national security, and since these cuts have the potential to gut our nation's defense, it's my highest priority to find other savings to reduce our nation's deficit while ensuring the Department of Defense has the resources needed to protect our military."
The Sequestration Transparency Act of 2012 requires President Obama to submit a report to Congress thirty days after the date of enactment detailing how the administration plans to implement the budget sequestration cuts required to take place in January 2013 under current law.
