Today, Congressman Diane Black (R-TN) released the following statement after the bipartisan passage of H.R. 5872, the Sequestration Transparency Act of 2012, which would require President Obama to detail his plans for implementing the $1.2 trillion across-the-board defense and discretionary spending cuts required by the Budget Control Act.

"President Obama has had nearly a year to put forward a plan to cut $1.2 trillion from federal spending, and he has done absolutely nothing. While the President appears to think he can just shirk his responsibility, the House spoke loud and clear today -- "not so fast, Mr. President, the American taxpayers and our troops deserve answers and solutions, not more excuses.'

"I joined the House in voting months ago to replace these devastating across-the-board cuts to our national defense with responsible, common-sense spending cuts and reforms. Moreover, the House-passed bill reduces the deficit by $242.8 billion more than what is even required by the Budget Control Act. But the President and Senate Democrats have not only rejected the solutions in the House-passed bill, but they have also failed to offer any alternative of their own. The American people will not reward this kind of reckless and irresponsible behavior.

"Our country desperately needs leaders in the Senate and White House who grasp the severity of the problems we face and will not run from the tough issues. I will continue to fight every day to balance the federal budget and reform entitlements so that current and future generations are able to realize the promise of the American Dream."

The Sequestration Transparency Act requires President Obama to detail how the administration plans to implement the budget sequestration cuts scheduled to take place in January 2013 under current law. The legislation recently passed the House Budget Committee on a bipartisan, unanimous vote.

Congressman Diane Black represents the 6th Congressional District of Tennessee and serves on the House Budget Committee and the Ways and Means Committee.
