I support badly needed transportation infrastructure improvements in Georgetown and Charleston counties, such as needed dredging for the Port of Georgetown and Charleston Harbor, and better interstate highway access -- all of which will aid in job growth.

I support the Georgetown Port Dredging Task Force in their ongoing efforts to find creative ways to fund dredging the port channel and basin to a minimum depth of 27′ to accommodate large cargo ships.

It's imperative that Highway 521 be completely four-laned to Interstate Highway 95 to be able to serve the Port of Georgetown and other county businesses. I support efforts to increase Charleston Harbor to a minimum depth of 50′ to be able to compete with other Atlantic Coast ports in handling the very large post-Panamax ships, resulting from the widening and deepening of the Panama Canal, which will be completed in 2014.

These large container ships will bring cargo from Asia across the Pacific to the East Coast, rather than going to ports on the West Coast and shipping the containers over land by truck or rail.
