America's economy is facing daunting challenges. For over a decade, Washington politicians have failed to live within their means, turning a budget surplus of over $230 billion into a $1.6 trillion deficit. Instead of reducing government spending and shrinking the size and cost of government, lawmakers from both parties went on a spending spree, leaving taxpayers to foot the bill. Now, we face a tidal wave of debt that has eroded economic confidence and hindered opportunities for prosperity for our next generations.

As a member of Congress during the 1990's, I helped balance the first federal budget in over a generation and gained first-hand knowledge of how to control Washington's appetite for wasteful spending. I was rated a "Watchdog of the Treasury" each of my six years in Congress, and earned the "Taxpayer Hero Award" for my proven voting record of reducing government spending.

When I return to Congress, I will work tirelessly to ensure we pass a balanced budget amendment. I strongly believe our federal government should maintain balanced budgets just as families and businesses must do every year. I will hold an honest and fact-based discussion with the taxpayers in my district about our insolvent entitlement programs, because I believe serious reform is needed in order to preserve Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Reducing government spending, eliminating budget deficits and paying down our national debt will require tough fiscal decisions by our lawmakers. I am ready and willing to make these decisions once again and return fiscal responsibility to Washington.
