Agriculture was a critical building block in America's foundation and has played a crucial role in the culture and economy of Louisiana and the First Congressional District. The First District is blessed with an abundance of agriculture resources, and Congressman Steve Scalise understands the importance of protecting these invaluable resources.

Over the last decade Louisiana's agriculture industry has faced many challenges. Disasters like Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil spill put a strain on our dairy and strawberry famers as well as our shrimpers and fishermen. Congressman Scalise is committed to helping our local farmers and fishermen recover from the impact these disasters.

As energy and other input costs rise, our farmers are struggling every day to maintain their operations. Congressman Scalise will continue working with his colleagues in Congress to bring down energy prices. Scalise has introduced the "GAS Act," which will lower the price of fuel by increasing America's supply of domestic oil and gas and exploring alternative energy sources.

In addition, Congressman Scalise has co-sponsored legislation to repeal the "death tax," which has adversely affected family farmers who want to pass down their family farms to their heirs.

America was founded on the strength of agricultural production. It is this strength that has led to America becoming one of the most prosperous countries in the world.
