In 2011, the federal government spent $3.6 trillion dollars, an all-time record. Our national debt surpassed $15 trillion dollars. All of this creates a mounting burden of debt that is draining our economy, crushing our job creators, hurting everyone from seniors to entrepreneurs and sticking our children and grandchildren with the bill.
It's time the federal government lives within its means, just like New Hampshire families and business owners do. When I was Mayor of Manchester, I fought hard to do just that by enacting a spending cap at the municipal level. I have worked to bring that same common sense to Washington. During my first term in Congress, I introduced a bill to cap federal spending, and also helped craft budgets that would cut our deficits significantly, pay down our debt, and set our country on a path to prosperity.
