Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-1) voted today against the Department of Defense Appropriations bill. She made the following statement after the vote:
"This Congress continues to pass spending bills with priorities that are completely out of sync with the American people. In the last few months, the House has slashed funding for safety net programs like legal aid and homeless assistance, cut investments in infrastructure that could have put more Americans back to work, maintained preferences for big oil companies over renewable energy, and passed a budget that guts Medicare. And by all accounts this assault on families will continue in the coming weeks with deep cuts to food assistance programs. The Defense funding bill, which spends $1.2 billion more than the Commander-in-Chief says is necessary, is no different. It is unconscionable that we would increase spending on war and weapons at the same time we are telling American families that they are on their own. Those are not priorities that will rebuild our economy, they are not the priorities of most Americans, and they are not priorities I could support."
