Letter to President Obama

Letter

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Congressman Frank A. LoBiondo (NJ-02) today wrote a letter of support for a federal major disaster declaration by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for significant damage incurred by heavy storms on June 30, 2012 to Atlantic, Cumberland and Salem Counties.

Earlier today, Acting New Jersey Governor Kim Guadagno petitioned the federal government for the declaration, citing destruction in each of the counties listed and their activation of their Emergency Operating Centers. The Acting Governor also cited the loss of life from the storms. LoBiondo concurs with the Acting Governor's assessment and is petitioning President Obama on behalf of residents and businesses in his district affected by the storms.

The full text of Congressman LoBiondo's letter in support of Acting Governor Guadagno's request is below:

Dear Mr. President,

As a result of the recent devastation caused by severe thunderstorms in Southern New Jersey, I write to you in strong support of Acting Governor Kimberly Guadagno's request for a Major Disaster Declaration through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the counties of Atlantic, Cumberland, and Salem in New Jersey.

As you may be aware, FEMA officials have been on site in Southern New Jersey assessing the wide range of damage inflicted by these severe thunderstorms that first struck early in the morning on June 30, 2012. It was quickly determined through these FEMA assessments that the incident was of such severity that a response was beyond the capabilities of affected local and State Governments, and federal assistance would be necessary. Accordingly, Acting Governor Guadagno made her formal request to you for a Major Disaster Declaration for Atlantic, Cumberland, and Salem counties on Wednesday, July 11, 2012.

Residents of some of the poorest communities in Southern New Jersey continue to feel the effects of the storms' damage with power outages caused by falling trees, downed power lines, and other wreckage. The impact of the storms will also strain local and county budgets. I respectfully request that prompt approval be given to Acting Governor Guadagno's request for a Major Disaster Declaration for Atlantic, Cumberland, and Salem counties.
