Southerland Demands Answers on President's Welfare Work Waivers

Representative Steve Southerland, II today authored a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius expressing concerns over the Obama administration's decision to waive mandatory work requirements for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program.

"After ignoring federal laws regarding immigration, traditional marriage, religious conscience rights, and intervention in Libya, the Obama administration has proven once again that they will not hesitate to cast aside the law when it suits their own interests," Southerland said. "Sadly, by waiving TANF work requirements for able bodied Americans who receive federal assistance, the President has made it that much harder for them to lift their family out of poverty. The American people deserve answers about how this divisive decision was made, along with constitutional justification for how it can be implemented without upending existing law."

The letter was co-signed by Reps. Tom Graves (R-GA) and Tim Scott (R-SC), along with 73 other House colleagues.
